Pride is evil for the same reason that arrogance is. Take pride in your accomplishments, not in your status. No one born in the US has earned the right to born here, it is by sheer chance that your life is comfortable. Why would you be proud?
I understand what you're saying, and you are not wrong in your assertion about pride, arrogance and being an American. Pride and arrogance do have the ability to go hand in hand, and we as individuals need to learn how to contain such pride, without the overwhelming arrogance.
I'd like to say that acquired pride is fine in and of itself. There's nothing wrong with being proud to be an American, or a Canadian, or white, or black. It's when that pride comes with a hubris when it becomes dangerous, and the seeds of irrationality. As an African American, I can honestly say that I am proud to be born as such. With that pride, it is still unacceptable for me to look down on others for not being my ethnicity. A huge part of pride is separating it from the aforementioned arrogance, something that Americans in general seem to lack.
Again, I feel you're right in your assertion about pride, I just wanted to show that there's a second side to it.
